Chance came to Bay St. Animal Hospital a short time before Christmas 06. I found her in a box at our front door with a note stating “Please put to sleep”. She was about 3-4 years old, black and purring. I brought her to Dr. Cavallaro to examine and the cat’s back end stood up but her front legs were tucked underneath her body. She pushed herself along on her chest. She also had a bite wound near her tail that needed treatment. One look at this cat had Dr. Cavallaro asking “How can we help her walk?” She diagnosed Chance with a congenital defect of her shoulders. The cat was able to stand up on her front left leg for a short period of time and could travel a few feet before falling over. There was no way she was euthanizing this otherwise healthy cat. I took a personal interest in helping Chance, too. I was determined to get her mobile. Dr. Cavallaro suggested some ‘feline physical therapy’.
I built the first cart too low and the second kept tipping over. I’ve watched the techs help injured dogs walk with the aid of a towel, so I tried that. It was almost right, but she would slip forward and out of the towel. She needed more support under her chest. I was playing with the idea of using a small duffle bag with holes for arms, legs and her head when I spotted exactly what I needed in a magazine. It was a PuppyPurse meant to carry small dogs. I emailed Hedy at PuppyPurse and told her of Chance’s needs. She donated a shiny silver one without hesitation. I was grateful for her generosity and the speedy delivery.
It’s only been a short time, but Chance and I are using our new physical therapy aid daily. She has a different view of the world now. Thank you again PuppyPurse!!

*CHANCE GETS A HOME!*
I’d like to extend a big thank you to Lila & Stephen Levey for taking Chance to their home to live. It was extremely hard to part with her, but I knew the best place for her was with them. She has denied her limitations and is living the life of a regular cat. Lila tells me Chance is able to jump in her bed and sleeps with them!!
THANK YOU—THANK YOU—THANK YOU!!!
